The National Entertainment Collectibles Association or NECA is an American manufacturer of collectibles typically licensed from films, video-games, sports, music, and television based in New Jersey. The company was founded in 1996 and has over 60 licenses for which it produces products.
NECA produced a limited number of action figures for Lord of the Rings based on Peter Jackson's Trilogy. Large articulated, 20" versions of three main characters were produced, as well as deluxe Gollum and Smeagol. NECA's other offerings were bobble-heads and pewter statues.
The Balrog was the greatest and most anticipated achievement of their work on LOTR. Balrog was first to release through Toy Biz back in 2002, but never saw the light of day due to many issues. This is where NECA stepped up, to releases him in 2006. Balrog's measurements were an impressive 23" tall, with a 42" wingspan!
Most of the NECA items were sculpted by Kyle "Tankman Windrix". The Balrog resin prototype took years to sculpt, and is housed in the Oklahoma Action Figure Museum.
